(1/31/2019) - As mid-Michigan begins to thaw from this latest arctic blast, some school districts could have classes Friday. At least one is making sure their busses are ready to roll after sitting for days. There hasn’t been too much movement at the Saginaw Intermediate School District Bus Yard. That could change as dozens of employees come back to work for the first time in almost a week. "If schools are open we will be on the roads,” SISD Transportation Supervisor Toni Butterfield said. Saginaw ISD employees stayed busy all week despite schools being shut down because of snow and bitterly cold temps. "Once the snow was through here on Monday it was just a matter of getting someone in here, which was our mechanics and they are awesome,” Butterfield said. The transportation supervisor says her mechanics are doing their part to keep the busses active. Other than some maintenance these busses have sat in the yard after not hitting the bus routes for four days straight. "We do have buses that are wheelchair equipped, so it is important that the lifts on those busses are able to be secure that students can be safely transported on the bus,” Butterfield said. "So it is important that those busses with those lifts on the busses are able to be secure so that students can safely be transported on the bus." Butterfield wants her workers in an hour earlier as a few schools have yet to cancel or debate on the idea of opening up. "Get the drivers in and get the busses dusted off and get them started up,” Butterfield said. With safety, their number one priority Butterfield is asking for patience. "Given some of the back roads that might not have been plowed we may be a little delayed,” she said.
