(4/19/2019) - A 63-year-old man drowned in choppy water on the eastern shore of Saginaw Bay while cleaning weeds and repairing his dock Friday afternoon.
He was working alone in the water off Cottage Drive, which is a private street near Unionville in Tuscola County, around 3:30 p.m. The man's wife went to check on him and found he was floating face down in the water.
With help from a neighbor, they dragged the man to shore. The task was difficult due to high winds and rough water, along with the man's waders getting filled with water.
Michigan State Police investigators believe the man was underwater for about 10 minutes.
Rescue workers from Akron-Columbia-Wisner Township and McLaren Bay Region EMS attempted life saving measures on shore, but the 63-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say an autopsy will be performed to help determine an exact cause of death.
