(1/28/2019) - The coldest air in 25 years is ready to make its move into Michigan. Sure, we get our fair share of arctic outbreaks every winter in The Mitten, but this one is different. This air is originating right from the North Pole and is being brought over the Great Lakes by our old friend, the Polar Vortex. Expect temperatures to fall through the day Tuesday with numbers already diving below zero by the early evening hours. Wind chill readings will be close to -30 by Tuesday night. A Wind Chill Watch is in effect for Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer and St. Clair counties for Tuesday through Thursday. Wednesday morning, many of us will be feeling the dangerous chill. Actual air temperatures will be -10 to -20 degrees with wind chills near -45 degrees for some parts of the area. The wind will be fierce enough all day long, keeping highs between -10 and -1 through the afternoon. The last time Flint or the Tri-Cities had a high temperatures below zero was Jan. 18, 1994 -- more than 25 years ago. The mercury stays sub-zero right through Thursday morning with the numbers rising to just over the zero degree mark briefly in the afternoon. Wind chills will be as cold as -40 degrees. Friday morning the skies will clear and winds will die down. We’ll have to watch Friday closely because air temperatures might get as cold as -25 degrees due to the tranquil conditions.
